There was Barista Jesus, a Bloody Jesus, an Occupy Jesus, a To Be Named Jesus, a Jewsus, a Santa Cruz Jesus, a Toddler Jesus, a Monkey Jesus, an MLK Jesus, a Grindr Jesus, a Led Zeppelin Jesus, a Toddler Jesus, even an Apeshit Jesus. There was a Lebowski Jesus who said he had a message for "the" Jesus: "That's just, like, your opinion, man."
But in the end, there was only one savior at the 2012 Hunky Jesus Contest put on at San Francisco's Dolores Park by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: Funky Jesus. Brandishing a large cross that doubled as an electric guitar and a flask-size bottle of Cutty Sark that doubled as a guitar pick, Funky Jesus took first prize and the crown at the annual Easter Sunday affair.
The San Francisco Chronicle writes, "Easter was the 33rd anniversary of the formation of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the charitable order of queer nuns who formed in 1979, when a few men donned habits and bar-hopped in the Castro to great applause. Today the order is worldwide, and uses a mixture of activism, camp and frivolity to promote tolerance and human rights, sometimes ruffling conservative members of the Catholic church"
Below are some additional photos. More photo coverage of the Hunky Jesus contest, as well as the bonnet contest, burlesque dancers, live bands, and other activities taking place at the park today will be posted on this blog throughout the week. Stay tuned for some colorful photos. & congrats to Funky Jesus.
