One of the nice things about moving to San Francisco is the sheer quantity of Chinese ingredients that are now suddenly accessible. It's like being in China again, only with clean air and less traffic. There were a few Chinese grocery stores in Minneapolis (our last stop), but nothing remotely comparing to what we now have available. One of the largest representation of Chinese stores is over on Irving Street and Hopper and I headed over there today to pick up the ingredients to make "ma la tang," loosely translated as "numbingly hot" soup. For persons interested in trying this dish for the first time, here is the cheater's guide.
