Pringles-brand "potato crisps" are widely sold in China. However, Pringles in China do not taste like Pringles. They taste like they have a different recipe from Pringles in the U.S. and I'm not only talking about the seafood flavored ones. They taste and look quite a bit like Lay's Stax.
When some Chinese stores had to pull Pringles off the shelves in 2008 because they contain potassium bromate (an ingredient prohibited by the Chinese government), others stores said their stock was Chinese-made and thus not affected. Glancing at the label of Chinese-market sour cream and onion chips, I see there are some minor differences with another ingredient label I I found listed online (mostly in the sour cream recipe), but I couldn't identify any of those differences as cause for the difference in flavor/texture.
It remains a mystery.
