When I visit Hong Kong, one of the first places I always visit is the Kowloon side of Victoria Harbour. Of course this is probably the first place that most tourists visit but I like it. It is a great place to catch a breath of fresh air. Alongside the boardwalk is the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars... walking eastward and you start to see the familiar names of contemporary stars. Nearly adjacent to Avenue of Stars is the Museum of Art, open everyday except Thursday and Sunday for a low price of 10 Hong Kong dollars. On this visit, we went to view some traditional Chinese ink brush paintings and a nice retrospective of the folk-style art of Ha Bik-chuen. I really liked Ha's mixed media projects using found objects and would have liked to buy a book of his work but couldn't find one in the bookstore- I guess that's why we have the Internet. We then made our way to the museum cafe, which offers some unusually exceptional coffee and lunch for an in-house establishment.
Next door to the Museum of Art is the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, a good place to pop in for upcoming performance schedules of events going on all across the different Hong Kong districts. Just outside the Cultural Centre, you can find the ferry stop, where regular ferries take visitors across the harbor to the Central and Wan Chai neighborhoods on Hong Kong Island for a price of only around a couple Hong Kong dollars. The museums and boardwalk are near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station and only a block or two away from the massive block of budget tourist hotels on Nathan Road (Chungking Mansions, etc.)
